We went to Macau on the turbojet today, a fast ferry which takes an hour to travel the 70km from Hong Kong. I felt very seasick on the journey (fortunately not quite as sick as the poor lady across the aisle from me...) but it was worth it.

Macau, like Hong Kong, is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People's Republic of China. It used to be under the Portugese (as HK was under the British). You can really see the Portugese influence in the architecture and also in the hundreds of mopeds lining the streets! It is known for it's casinos and we went for lunch in one - the iconic Grand Lisboa which is shaped like a Lotus flower - the symbol of Macau:

The restaurant was called 8 and has a Michelin Star. The decor inside incorporates many figure 8s, considered a lucky number by the Chinese (8 sounds like 'wealth' in Mandarin and 'fortune' in Cantonese), and also large goldfish murals on the walls, which represent prosperity (the word goldfish in Mandarin sounds like 'gold in abundance'). We all enjoyed our luxury Dim Sum there!
